SoroSoke is built for civic discourse — which means the accuracy of information shared on the platform matters deeply. We use a combination of community-powered tools and editorial policy to identify and limit the spread of false or misleading content.
Our approach
We believe in empowering communities to surface truth rather than relying solely on centralised moderation. Our strategy has three layers:
- Community signalling — the Freeze reaction lets any user flag content they believe is misleading.
- Algorithmic de-amplification — posts with a high Freeze-to-Verify ratio are reduced in feed visibility without being deleted.
- Editorial review — our trust and safety team reviews flagged content that reaches a significance threshold, especially around elections, public health, and security.
The Freeze feature
Freeze is SoroSoke's primary community fact-check tool. It is not a dislike — it is a civic signal. When you tap Freeze on a post, you are telling the platform and other users: "I have reason to doubt this claim."
What happens when a post is Frozen:
- The Freeze count is visible to all users who view the post.
- When the number of Freeze reactions exceeds a threshold relative to reach, the post's distribution is reduced — fewer users see it in their feed.
- Posts that accumulate a very high Freeze ratio are flagged for human review.
- The original post author is notified that their content has been flagged.
Freeze does not remove content. Posts remain visible to users who navigate directly to them.
The Verify feature
Verify is the counterpart to Freeze. Tapping Verify on a post signals that you can independently confirm the claim being made. Posts with a high Verify count are given greater reach in the feed. Together, Freeze and Verify create a community-sourced credibility score for every post.
What we remove outright
Some forms of misinformation are removed without waiting for community signals:
- Content containing fabricated government communications, doctored official documents, or fake court orders.
- Coordinated inauthentic behaviour — multiple accounts working together to amplify false narratives.
- Health misinformation that could cause physical harm (e.g. false medical treatments or vaccine disinformation during a declared health emergency).
- Electoral misinformation that falsely states polling dates, voter eligibility rules, or election results before official declaration.
Satire and opinion
We recognise that not all exaggerated or one-sided content is misinformation. Satire and opinion are protected forms of civic expression on SoroSoke. However, satire must be reasonably identifiable as such — content that mimics a factual report without clear satirical markers may be treated as misinformation if widely misunderstood.
Appealing a moderation decision
If your post was removed or de-amplified and you believe the decision was incorrect, you can appeal by contacting support@sorosokegpl.com with the subject line "Misinformation Appeal" and a link to the affected post. Our team reviews appeals within 3 business days.
Protecting civic actors
Journalists, civil society organisations, and public officials face elevated risk of targeted misinformation campaigns — especially around elections. SoroSoke provides additional monitoring for accounts operating under verified civic roles during sensitive periods. If your organisation needs this support, contact partnerships@sorosokegpl.com.
